OHS grad Sherm Garnett reappointed dean of James Madison College

EAST LANSING - Sherm Garnett, a 1973 graduate of Owosso High School, has been reappointed dean of James Madison College at Michigan State University in East Lansing.

Prior to coming back to lead his alma mater in August of 1999, Garnett was senior associate at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, where he directed projects on security and national identity in the former USSR and Russian-Chinese relations. While at Carnegie, he wrote a wide range of articles on the post-Communist world and a book on Ukraine.

Before that, Garnett worked for more than a dozen years on arms control and post-Communist security policy questions in a variety of positions in the U.S. government, finishing his government service as the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Russia, Ukraine and Eurasia. He received the Defense Department's Medal for Distinguished Civilian Service in 1994.

Garnett graduated from James Madison College at MSU in 1977. He holds a master's degree in Russian and Eastern European studies from Yale University and a Ph.D. in Russian literature from the University of Michigan.

His current research interests include contemporary global security problems, political and security trends in Eurasia and Russian intellectual and literary history. Garnett's interests include the former Soviet Union, especially Russian foreign and security policy, Ukraine and comparative political and security issues for the post-Communist world.

Garnett is the son of Sherman Sr. and Jackie Garnett of Owosso and is married to Jill Garnett. They have three children, Sara, Anna, and Patrick, and reside in Okemos.

He is a charter member of the Owosso High School Wall of Honor.
