High school golfers win All-State honors

Two area golfers recently completed their senior years at their respective schools and have been named All-State.

Nick Gunthorpe of Ovid-Elsie was selected to the Division 3 first team by the Michigan Interscholastic Golf Coaches Association.

Cameron Beckner of Durand was named Division 3 honorable mention All-State.

Gunthorpe was one of nine golfers to earn the top honor in Division 3. Joining him on the All-State first team were sophomore Jon Christ of Kalamazoo Hackett, juniors Curtis Hanba of Big Rapids, Sheldon Keyte of Kalamazoo Hackett, Michael Prior of Schoolcraft and Patrick Staudt of Lansing Catholic Central and seniors Nick Cunningham of Flint Powers Catholic, Tobin Dunigan of Jackson Lumen Christi and B. Addison Monfils of Big Rapids,

Gunthorpe recently placed eighth individually at the 2008 MHSAA Lower Peninsula Division 3 Finals at Forest Akers East in East Lansing. He delivered a two-day total of 150 (77/73).

He plans to attend Grand Valley State University.

Beckner led the Railroaders to their first-ever state finals appearance. Durand placed 14th in the Division 3 standings with Beckner leading the way with a 158 (78/80).

Matt Thompson, a senior at Lakeview, was named 2008 Mr. Golf.
