Perry's Baumgartner places fifth at Junior Amateur

MT. PLEASANT - Perry graduate Blaize Baumgartner finished fifth Wednesday in the 30th Michigan Girls' Junior Amateur tournament at Mt. Pleasant Country Club.
Baumgartner shot 82 on the opening day in the 16- to 18-year-old Division and followed with a 76 for a 158 total.
Elizabeth Ecker of Niles was the overall winner with a 153 total.
The top eight stroke-play finishers qualified for match play. Baumgartner, seeded sixth, lost her opening match 4 and 3 to No. 3 Minjoo Lee of Clarkston. Clarkston went on to beat No. 2 Melissa Beurmann of Jackson 1-up in 20 holes and then No. 1 Ecker 5 and 3 in the championship match.
The match-play portion of the tournament is in its eighth year.
Baumgartner's sister Bree finished tied for 24th in stroke play with a 174 total (91-83). Beurmann was the stroke-play runner-up with a 155 total.
Both sisters, as well as Owosso graduate Stephanie Bevington, are among the golfers scheduled to play in the Women's Amateur at Walnut Hills starting July 7.
