CORUNNA - Chief of Police Kim Williams still will not comment on the alleged termination of a part-time officer.
Officer Angelo Panos, who worked for the city for nearly five years, said he was fired Thursday.
“Like I told you the other day, I have no comment,” Williams said Monday.
Panos' attorney, Dean Yeotis, said the Corunna Police Department removed Panos' ability to use the Law Enforcement Information Network.
LEIN is a database that contains personal information such as criminal and driving records.
Shiawassee County Central Dispatch oversees LEIN - a statewide network - within the county. The sheriff's department refused to comment on Panos' status. A Freedom of Information Act request by The Argus-Press is pending.
“It's my understanding that they cut off his LEIN privileges,” Yeotis said. “I don't know how he's going to do his job if he can't do that.”
Williams confirmed Panos' LEIN privileges were revoked.
“Well he's not a police officer here, so they would be revoked,” Williams said, refusing further comment.
Yeotis claims the backlash against Panos stems from Panos' 2005 arrest of City Manager Joe Sawyer for drunk driving.
The city paid Panos $25,000 to settle a civil lawsuit last year in which Panos claimed he was passed up for a full-time position in 2005. Panos said at the time it was because he arrested Sawyer for drunk driving.
In Panos' lawsuit, he claimed his employment with the city was threatened multiple times. Panos had no shifts scheduled for a six- week period after arresting Sawyer and the city tried to have him charged with racial discrimination in October 2006.
“I guess I don't know where they're coming from,” Yeotis said. “Angelo tried to take the high road the first time around. All he's ever wanted to do is serve the Corunna community as a police officer.”
Yeotis said the move may be retaliation for comments Panos made at a Durand City Council meeting in July.
Panos spoke in support of former Durand Police Officer Lex A. Crooks. Crooks was fired by Durand Police Chief Mike Tanner in June after he was involved automobile accident where he was allegedly drunk driving. Crooks will appear in court later this week for his final pretrial.
“He verbally abused me and wasn't very nice to me,” Panos said at the July council meeting of Sawyer's arrest. He also said he didn't think Sawyer should've lost his job. “We all make mistakes.”
The Corunna Police Department has six full- and part-time police officers on its force.
Yeotis said Panos' civil lawsuit against the city protects him under the Michigan Whistleblower's Act.
Panos' Flint-based attorney said there may be a case for another lawsuit.
“We've got to find out what they're going to do,” Yeotis said. “If they've terminated him, I'd say there's a case.”

What people do on their own time is no ones business and it is up to God to judge them. For the negative things said about Kim Williams let me tell you what kind of a man he really is. When a family member of ours was dying,on his days off from the department he would drive him to Saginaw for his treatments. He didn't have to do that but WANTED to.
And all you can do is whine about poor Panos. And, I also admire Joe Sawyer for what he did on his drunk driving charge. At least he owned up to his mistakes. He paid his price and Panos has to continue bringing it up when he fails at his job. What about Panos owning up to his????? He won't as he isn't man enough.
Because of Panos losing his temper the last time we were at the family restaurant we will never dirty our feet in there again. He needs to get a life and leave others alone. We have also seen him make customers get up from a certain area of tables and sit elsewhere so he could play Mr.Big Shot to other police officers. And, let them have their food for half price while he wouldn't for his help that the waitresses don't even make minumum wages and he won't cover it. His girlfriend and her mother were two of the worst waitresses out there and they got the best of everything. But, not the ones who deserved the help. No wonder they always have an ad in the Argus for servers. "

I've worked for the City of Corunna for over 10 years and I have never seen a worse officer than Panos. If you don't show up for work when scheduled, lie, and are insubordinate, you don't get to keep your job. That happens anywhere! The employees of the City of Corunna are glad to see Panos go.
As Nichole said, if the Argus was interested in getting at the truth, they would FOIA Panos' employment records.
Also, if the Argus Press would stop being a "rag" just to get more readers, the city employees would be happy to make statements to you. But, we don't want our comments misquoted, taken out of context, or spun to fit a sensationalize story.
I hope it goes to trial too. Then we'll see who is telling the truth. "

You want to know another stunt Panos pulled. I will tell you. One day he had to go to the shooting range. Something the officers do twice a year. They are to take their on duty gun only. Well Mr. Panos decided to take not only his on duty gun, but all his guns. So he took about 5 or 6 guns (not sure if it was 5 or 6) but anyways, he wanted to be paid for shooting them all and cleaning them all. So again he is trying to waste the taxpayers money. He can shoot his off duty guns and clean them in his own time. Not the City's time!!! But if you are saying that is ok, then it needs to be ok for everyone at City Hall to do personal business during work hours. I mine as well go do my grocery shopping during work hours if everyone is so willing to allow taxpayers to pay for us to do personal stuff.
So you see, you are only seeing a side of Panos that he wants you to see. "

Now let's address the Joe Sawyer issue everyone seems to keep bringing up. Yes he got arrested for drinking and driving. This is not new News. He was arrested on his own time. Guess what, I work with Joe, and believe it or not, he is human!!!!! Maybe that should be the headline "Joe Sawyer is Human and he actually made a mistake!!!" Well for those of you who do not know, he has paid his dues, just like any other person that has gotten arrested for the same thing. Now I could see you bringing it up in the paper again, if he was arrested again. But as far as I know, he has not been. He has learned a very valuable lesson, one that many others should learn but have not, and hopefully we do not learn the hard way like Joe did. So that issue is in the past so let it go. We all don't need a constant reminder of that setup. And yes, I do believe it was a setup. But that is whole different story that is in the past. We at the City have moved on and we still have more respect for Joe today than we did before his arrest. I have never had a boss that loved his job and the people as much as Joe. I could not ask for a better boss. He is a better boss than I could have ever imagined.
My next issue is with the Argus. Wow. Have you guys ever heard of getting both sides of the story? Never mind, I already know that answer. Not sure what Panos has on you guys, is it free coupons for his dive, oh, I mean diner. If you are saying no one is commenting, you are right. You know why? I will tell you, because you twist everything!!! You do not state what people really say. So yes, I suppose we are not comfortable talking with the Argus. That is what happens when you get a bad reputation. Maybe you should work on cleaning that up a bit then you would get the truth. Instead it is like reading the Enquirer. So Argus, clean up your act and I bet we would be more than happy to answer any questions you have, as long as you earn our trust back.
Now for my last issue. Yes, I am on a roll here!!! Panos sued us for not getting the full time position a while back. I have read his application, trust me, you would not hire him to be a parkinglot security guard. Would you hire someone that has many years of experience, great reputation, awesome resume and references or someone that handed in there application late, that does not have the qualifications that the other applicants turned in. First of all, it was LATE!!!! Enough said. We have deadlines for a reason, if you cannot follow that simple rule, are you really qualified to be a full time officer? So when he sued the City for that and got a settlement, I was pretty disgusted. We would have loved to go to trial but unfortunately we did not have the choice. Our Insurance knew it would be cheaper to pay him off than to go to court and win. So you see, if we went to court and won, it would have cost far more than the $25,000 we paid to him. His attorney is no dummy. He knew the dollar amount to ask for to make sure it settled out of court whether or not we were innocent, which we were.
I know, I said that was my last issue, but I thought of one more. Goes back to the Argus only printing what they want people to know. Now if you really wanted to get the truth, why don't you FOIA Panos information? That right there tells me you do not care what the real truth is.
Okay, there you have it. I feel better. Someone needs to speak up around here and let you know Panos is not this respectable officer he tries to make himself out to be. "
Garden Gal wrote on Aug 20, 2008 2:35 PM:
Bryan Kauffman has it completely wrong. Panos didn't win any lawsuit. It was settled by Panos. I'm quite sure Panos did not want to go to court because he knows the courts have a way of getting at the truth.
I hope this one does go to trial. There's a lot more to this story, and the Sawyer arrest, than has come out in the papers so far.
The police, city manager, and everyone else connected with the city should wait and make their comments in court. At least the court will make sure the statements are quoted correctly, unlike the Argus! "

Sawyer. This incident happened years ago. If the city was being vindictive, they would have found a way to be rid of him much quicker. Mr. Panos always brings up the incident with the City Manager, which I might add, was handled much more professionally by Mr. Sawyer. He did not whine and run to the press, instead he took full responsibility for his actions and learned from his mistakes. I personally am tired of reading about it. Mr. Panos, perhaps it is time for you to take a hint... You are no longer effective and an embarrasment to the other officers. Pick up your toys, and go home, and for goodness sakes, give this thing a rest. "

Your online poll is unjust. You are a terribly one-sided "newspaper". One of the options on your poll should read "I don't have enough information to judge, for I am not God". These are people's lives you're messing with. There's a difference between reporting a story & twisting information. Sounds to me like Mr. Panos has a buddy at the Argus. "

C-H-I-R-O-S and he truly does hide behind his badge, lay off a good officer and open your eyes. I would be a bit paranoid and more to if I went through what Officer Panos has been through with this town, and I know how poorly they treat people and talk to them I have been on that end. You go Mr. Panos! "
