OWOSSO - With the cold winter fast approaching, the Planning Commission approved a final site plan review for a multi-million dollar expansion at Memorial Healthcare during a special meeting Monday night.
The first phase of the project - a temporary main entrance located on the north side of the Mitchell Medical Specialties building - will be completed this fall.
The temporary canopied entrance will allow for a 50,000-square-foot addition to the main entrance on West King Street.
“They are building a new surgical area that will be completed next spring,” Commissioner Burton Fox said. “In order to facilitate that, we approved building a temporary drop-off center.”
During the meeting, Memorial Healthcare Director of Facilities Brian White outlined the first phase of the project.
“We are going to add drive-under canopies (to the temporary entrance),” White said.
He also said the plans called for an estimated 74 additional parking spaces.
Uncertain weather conditions this winter means the project does not have specific estimations for the cost or time of completion, White said.
“It has to be completed in phases, so we won't know when we can start on the next (phase) until we finish the first one,” White said. “We are looking at potentially beginning this fall on the temporary entrance.”
White added he expects the total cost of the expansion to be in the millions. He added if construction on the new entrance begins in the spring, the entire project would be finished in a couple years.
n During the special meeting, the city council approved bids so construction could begin on the Owosso Walk of History today., according to City Manager Joe Fivas.
