Corunna School Board removes display on homosexuality

CORUNNA - The Corunna Board of Education voted Monday to remove a club project in a display case at Corunna High School that highlighted the acceptance of homosexuality and alternative lifestyles.
The Diversity Club's display featured about nine photos of athletes, politicians and educators who live a homosexual lifestyle, Corunna Superintendent Dr. Mark Miller said.
The 5-2 decision during Monday's meeting sends the sensitive issue to the District Health Advisory Committee so it can be discussed in an open forum in front of the public.
Since the Board of Education met in the middle school building, not everyone could head to the display case and review the group's project.
With numerous parents complaining about it, the Board felt it best to have the project removed from the case - as there are just 10 days left in October.
The committee has training in specific areas dealing with the issue allowing them to delve into greater depth - all open to the public.
“We only had a problem with this specific display,” said Maureen Stanley, president of the Corunna Board of Education. “The club will continue ... it has nothing to do with the club. The specific display, however, has been amended.”
The committee is made up of teachers, ministers, health-field professionals, parents, counselors, school board members and students who discuss topics such as the display case item specifically, at what age to inform students about various lifestyles, where projects may be displayed in the buildings and an overall public comment session.
The meeting will take place within the next two weeks, with a date, time and place posted upon announcement.
This controversial issue of sexual orientation falls under the District Health Advisory Committee, along with other topics such as pregnancy, health education, diversity and abstinence, among other topics.
Stanley said the Diversity Club was created to promote tolerance, respect and discuss how to treat all groups equally recognizing that everyone is different.
The group's October's theme, profiling gay and lesbians, would be better dealt in other scenarios such as in human sexuality or diversity classes, according to members of the board, Stanley said.
“The display case may confuse other kids,” she said. “High school kids can be very impressionable so that might be better dealt with in those classes.”
Stanley said because the display case limits the amount of information given to students, a more informational setting is necessary to discuss the alternative lifestyles.
“We aren't going to review everything that this club does,” Stanley said.
“We did not feel that was something that needed to be highlighted in the school, that's basically it,” Trustee Lyle Brooks said.

Whoever the parents are who complained about the display case need to wake up and look around. Your child will soon be entering the real world where they'll have to face the diversity of which it contains. If your student is a senior and heading to college next year, go ahead and write a letter to the university asking them to prohibit any public displays dipicting sexual orientation. See how far it gets you! If you know you can't do it next year, then why do it now?
Teach these students that there is a world outside of Corunna. Teach them that there is a thing called diversity. And QUIT sheltering and coddling them. You're causing more harm than good. "

My kids are doing the same. I sent this article to a friend to get his take on it. He has helped me with the problems with my son always being called gay. He has sent it to people he knows to look at the. Here are somethings that was sent back to me. I just haven't seen an update on the Argus Press. Read and learn see what else is being said.

I am pleased to let everyone know that Jay Kaplan, staff attorney with the ACLU-MI's LGBT Project is already involved with this one. He has intereviewed the Principal, some of the students and is preparing a Freedom of Information Request for the audio tape of the school board meeting. This is just one reason why everyone should be a member of the ACLU and supporting its LGBT Project. You can make a donation to the LGBT Project through the ACLU-MI Fund (which is a 501 c3 deductible contribution under the federal income tax) directly on line (as well as become a member of the ACLU) by going to http://www.aclumich .org.

ACLU just got off the phone with the Corruna School District and the school board will be rescinding the action that they took last week at the Monday nite, November 2nd school board meeting. The Board realizes that the action they took raises 1st Amendment concerns- when a school district creates an open forum for non-curricular clubs like the display cases, it can censor a display based on its content. The Diversity Club will be permitted to put back their exhibit in the display case.
Thank you for the e-mail. Doug Meeks

They should be ashamed and if I was still in the area I would lead a protest and demand a recall of the school board members... "

Being a born again believer, I do not condone "alternative" life styles but that is not the point. Our schools should be about reading, writing and arithmetic( as M posted). Yes it is a time in your life where you discover who you are and make some life decisions. But if the school is going to do it's best to keep God out of schools, then all of the other stuff shouldn't matter either. But the fact of the matter is as long as there are tests, sporting events, and difficult classes to take- kids will be praying. As long as there are people who chose ( yes chose, they have found that homosexuality IS NOT proven to be genetic- read up) to enjoy the company of the same gender in a way that was not intended, then they will do it. But to FORCE me or my kids to accept it is a contradiction because you will not accept my life style choice. For one, it should be the parents job to talk to their kids about life as we all know it- not the school and sure as heck isn't the governments place to tell me how to tell my kids either.
As for those that quote the bible to support your sin- shame on you. God is love, and He calls those who believe in Him and trust in Him to "love your neighbor as our selves", not accept your neighbors' life style choices.
TY CPS for doing your best to keep it all bipartisan. And not choosing one or the other. "

- By telling the Board members to, in effect, "keep your opinions to yourself," is that not violating their free speech??
- By not supporting their decision to pass this along to the proper committee and removing the display in the meantime, is that not being intolerant towards them??
Funny how "free speech" and "intolerance" can so often be self-serving. I grant you "free speech" (but only if your speech pleases me). I expect you to show tolerance (but if you aren't so in the way I wish, I will not tolerate it). "

So afraid that homosexuality is like a virus--you will "catch it" if you acknowledge it.
Well, guess what--your children go to school with, sit next to, study with, talk with, eat lunch with, play sports with, and befriend, homosexuals.
You think 9 pictures are going to confuse your child so now those pictures are taken down and tucked away--back in the closet, so to speak.
Now, it you can just get rid of all those gays in the school your kids will be safe.
So sad. Intolerance reigns supreme.
Those kids who have learned one thing--acceptance as defined by the adults doesn't include them if they are homosexual.
A shameful day for Corunna School district. "

It's funny a very popular show I'm sure many high schooler watch "Grey's anatomy" just had a little discussion on this. a gay female doctor is confronted by her father about her sexuality. Her father was spouting bible quotes about homosexuality being evil, this was her response: Jesus.. a new commandment that I give unto you that you love one another. Jesus.. He who is without sin among you let him cast the first stone. Blessed are the merciful for they shall obtain mercy. Jesus.. Blessed are the pure and heart for they see God. Jesus…blessed are those who have been persecuted for righteousness sake for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven. Jesus is my savior Daddy not you, and Jesus would be ashamed of you for judging me, He would be ashamed of you for turning your back on me, He would be ashamed…."
Maybe those in the community need to take a lesson from a TV show and learn that all people need love and tolerance and to save judgement for God, I'm sure he has way more experience than you do. "

Whenever you hold a public office, you must put your own personal views aside in order to be a voice for all members of your constituency. My understanding is that Member Lockwood gave a sermon that included the following:
”When I look at these monthly themes it is apparent to me that one does not choose to be a black man, or a woman, or Hispanic, or Latino. One would say that sexual preference is an orientation. One may have an orientation to shoplift and they even say god made them that way but we wouldn’t display it on a bulletin board. One may even have an orientation toward adultery and go as far as god made him that way but we would not condone that in a school setting. These individuals refer to themselves as an orientation. A black man doesn’t choose to be black, a tall white man doesn’t choose to be tall…these people have an orientation or choice for this lifestyle.” Wow, do we really believe that this is the type of representation we need from any public official in the year 2009? I believe that there is only one person who has the right to be this judgmental and that is God himself? It is not the right of anyone but God to make that judgment when the day comes.
Mr. Lockwood’s position on the board should not be a pulpit for his religious views. Is he suggesting that students of Corunna High School who will go out into a world that may have them working next to or for homosexuals should not be tolerant? Shame on you Mr. Lockwood and the board of Corunna Public Schools. You have given the good name of Corunna a black eye with your personal views on this matter. "
