Corunna School Board removes display on homosexuality

CORUNNA - The Corunna Board of Education voted Monday to remove a club project in a display case at Corunna High School that highlighted the acceptance of homosexuality and alternative lifestyles.

The Diversity Club's display featured about nine photos of athletes, politicians and educators who live a homosexual lifestyle, Corunna Superintendent Dr. Mark Miller said.

The 5-2 decision during Monday's meeting sends the sensitive issue to the District Health Advisory Committee so it can be discussed in an open forum in front of the public.

Since the Board of Education met in the middle school building, not everyone could head to the display case and review the group's project.

With numerous parents complaining about it, the Board felt it best to have the project removed from the case - as there are just 10 days left in October.

The committee has training in specific areas dealing with the issue allowing them to delve into greater depth - all open to the public.

“We only had a problem with this specific display,” said Maureen Stanley, president of the Corunna Board of Education. “The club will continue ... it has nothing to do with the club. The specific display, however, has been amended.”

The committee is made up of teachers, ministers, health-field professionals, parents, counselors, school board members and students who discuss topics such as the display case item specifically, at what age to inform students about various lifestyles, where projects may be displayed in the buildings and an overall public comment session.

The meeting will take place within the next two weeks, with a date, time and place posted upon announcement.

This controversial issue of sexual orientation falls under the District Health Advisory Committee, along with other topics such as pregnancy, health education, diversity and abstinence, among other topics.

Stanley said the Diversity Club was created to promote tolerance, respect and discuss how to treat all groups equally recognizing that everyone is different.

The group's October's theme, profiling gay and lesbians, would be better dealt in other scenarios such as in human sexuality or diversity classes, according to members of the board, Stanley said.

“The display case may confuse other kids,” she said. “High school kids can be very impressionable so that might be better dealt with in those classes.”

Stanley said because the display case limits the amount of information given to students, a more informational setting is necessary to discuss the alternative lifestyles.

“We aren't going to review everything that this club does,” Stanley said.

“We did not feel that was something that needed to be highlighted in the school, that's basically it,” Trustee Lyle Brooks said.

That seeing pictures of sucessful people who are happy with their lives could make you think that "impressionable" CHS students would all abandon the Heterosexual ways? Here is a news flash...there are Gay, Lesbian, bi-sexual and transgendered people in CORUNNA! Some of them even go to high school in your small town. Seeing a picture is not going to make a kid change their sexual orientation. Seriously the CHS school board need to jump into the times....I remember when I went to CHS having a anatomy book that was older than I was because heaven forbid....We see pictures of Naked bodies....nope we had to have the out dated books because they had drawings. You say you support the Diversity Club, but I guess only when they meet your idea of acceptable diversity. But mostly I just want to say you are hindering your students and leaving them unprepared for the world you are sending them into. Not only that but it is exactly this kind of attitude that leads to hate crimes and violence against innocent people...no one wants that not even you. Oh and in case you were wondering...no I AM NOT gay, lesbian, bi-sexual or transgendered myself. So as my Grandfather would say "Put that in your pipe and smoke it" "

" I've always believed that CHS coddles their students, and perhaps it's not just CHS; however, since I am a graduate from Corunna, I can only speak for this high school. The administrators, faculty, and PARENTS especially need to realize that right after high school, kids are thrown into the "real world." In the real world, there is a thing called diversity, unlike what little exists in the school district. There are people from all ethnic backgrounds living in this country outside of little Corunna, some who may be mentally handicapped, or who have other differences such as identifying as gay, lesbian, transgendered, etc. We all have differences, and students at Corunna need to be taught that, especially those who are college-bound.
Whoever the parents are who complained about the display case need to wake up and look around. Your child will soon be entering the real world where they'll have to face the diversity of which it contains. If your student is a senior and heading to college next year, go ahead and write a letter to the university asking them to prohibit any public displays dipicting sexual orientation. See how far it gets you! If you know you can't do it next year, then why do it now?
Teach these students that there is a world outside of Corunna. Teach them that there is a thing called diversity. And QUIT sheltering and coddling them. You're causing more harm than good. "

I am pleased to let everyone know that Jay Kaplan, staff attorney with the ACLU-MI's LGBT Project is already involved with this one. He has intereviewed the Principal, some of the students and is preparing a Freedom of Information Request for the audio tape of the school board meeting. This is just one reason why everyone should be a member of the ACLU and supporting its LGBT Project. You can make a donation to the LGBT Project through the ACLU-MI Fund (which is a 501 c3 deductible contribution under the federal income tax) directly on line (as well as become a member of the ACLU) by going to http://www.aclumich .org.

ACLU just got off the phone with the Corruna School District and the school board will be rescinding the action that they took last week at the Monday nite, November 2nd school board meeting. The Board realizes that the action they took raises 1st Amendment concerns- when a school district creates an open forum for non-curricular clubs like the display cases, it can censor a display based on its content. The Diversity Club will be permitted to put back their exhibit in the display case.

The use of the term "Lifestyle" to describe homosexuality is very misleading. A lifestyle is something that is chosen...ones sexuality is not chosen, it's given. It's all about certain chemicals in the brain is all. Not a disease, not an epidemic, CERTAINLY not a choice. I think the school board needs to realize that this has hurt people, and can make LGBT teens feel unwanted and unaccepted in their school. It wasn't a choice for those teens to be attracted to what they are, but it was a choice for that school board to basically tell them they are a bad influence on the kids. Who should feel more ashamed? "

" As usual Corunna Public School drops the ball on this one to. Instead of doing something about the drug and alchol abuse in their lockerrooms they pick on kids that do not have a choice of sexally. O h yeah thats right these kids have big Corunna names from their moms and dads making a big play back in the 1980 s . But the varity football coach found out about these six special names and suspended them for 3 games and gave up a shot at the football play-offs for for this year . That is a man with great honor and dignety to go against that great Corunna tradition of THE NAME GAME . This is the second time this coach as done something like this . He was at a school function for the football team where six names where these students parents either worked for the school system or onthe school board itself , and sent these players home from that function...football varity camp...where they shot a gentman with their paintball guns from one of the school board parents van . By the way ,none and I stress none of these kids wre suspended or even talked to about what they did . Now that is Counna tradition . I called Johnny Smith myself and he said and I quote "Don't worry about unless you give me your name so I can tell the coach you have a problem with a hoax and joke of the matter".that the 6 player did .As usally lift the carpet and sweep under it a another big Corunna tradition. So the coach can tell the coach so he can tell the team that your son has a problem with it , so he can bring my son up in front of the so does not look like a team player. One good thing about that incident that coach resigned at that end of that year . Thats when Coruuna finally hired a coach with strong backbone to stand up to these names and said that is enough. So I will end with this as long as your name is in a past Corunna yearbook and daddy play quarterback or played on the state basketball team your name on the back of the jersey should read ,NOBODY,and as for Johnny Smith has since retired I will say this KARMA will fine that guys family and put them in front of somebody and make a example out of them .So he can see how that taste. I will see to it Smith alll the way to my last dieing breath. Remeber one thing Coruuna School Board you are a elected offfial of the system and one day you will not have a name to back you up whenthe names leave this losing tradition behind . This time it is about sexallity next it will be about skin color mark my words on that. Because the names in Corunna names are not going to let thier kids play back-up to kids of color., wait and see . And I would encourage any other Coruuna parent to write on here and tell about the CORUNNA NAME GAME all you see why people genally don not like Corunna kids. So namers bring it on I have many, many skeletons in the closet that I would love to throw under the bus..Good night now. "

As for you poor excuses for parents out there, if children wish to explore that lifestyle then you as parents and guardians need to recognize that you cant FORCE your kids to think or act a certain way. This is a new time people, and the backwards, hateful, and homophobic ways of the past need to end if we are going to move forward. Also, you need to think about censorship in our schools. It starts with a pro- homosexual display in a school hallway, where does it end. I know, how about since the 9/11 attacks on we're so horrible that we don't want kids learning about it, lets just censor that too. How about evolution, or hey how about art, there is nudity in some art so we should censor that too. Pretty soon we're gonna have our kids wearing the same clothes, thinking the same thoughts, and living their lives in a blissful and horrifying ignorance. Whats going to happen when these kids reach the real world, are they going to think that its okay to hate or condemn homosexuals? Are they going to act violently towards someone who is different then they are? A simple little display in a backwater nowhere community isn't going to turn thousands of children in to homosexuals. I think the parents who complained about this really need to get back to worrying about real dangers to their children like the flu, or drunk driving, not some pictures of gay people in a little hallway. It was as simple as this: two rainbow flags, a banner that said Gay, Lesbian, Bi-Sexual Awareness Month", and had some pictures of prominent individuals who are gay, lesibian, or bi-sexual. No different than having a display case with prominent African Americans during a month to honor them. "

" For those referring to Leviticus Chapter 18 Verse 22 as part or, in some short-sighted opinions, all of your case against homosexuality...I have one question for you. I have read enough of the Bible to know a little about this: In Numbers 15:32-36 the Isrealites found a man gathering sticks on the Sabbath. God directed them to stone that man to death for working on the sabbath. Does that mean I should have my boss arrested for working on Saturday or should I kill him myself? Deuteronomy 28:53: If an enemy lays seige to my hometown or country, is it ok for my parents to boil and eat me? Leviticus 24:10-16,23: Yesterday my coworker uttered the words "God d*mnit" after tripping over a chair in the office. Would it be ok to kill him for blasphemy by any means available to me or do I really NEED to use stones?

Seems to me that if you really fear the Lord your God then you would heed his word when he says "read the entire Bible and read it every day." Do I? No. But it seems to me that I'll have to come to grips with that. God didn't tell us to pick and choose but for His sake, there is something called civility in this world that has been a work in progress since before His time... "

This whole situation was handled inappropriately in front of the public and should have been further reviewed and discussed. I am assuming the Superintendent and Principal walk the halls of CHS daily and also am assuming they thought the display was tasteful and not influencial. If this is the "new" Corunna School system board of education protocol----guarantee enrollment will be effected. The board is to advise based upon consultation with paid school administrators. This board appears to be trying to run the district as back seat drivers. Never remember prior CHS board from decades before making front page news on controversial issues that are faced and will be faced by our kids every single day in today's environment. Sad times for CHS currently if this new board continues this type of agenda. Being a born again believer, I do not condone "alternative" life styles but that is not the point. Our schools should be about reading, writing and arithmetic( as M posted). Yes it is a time in your life where you discover who you are and make some life decisions. But if the school is going to do it's best to keep God out of schools, then all of the other stuff shouldn't matter either. But the fact of the matter is as long as there are tests, sporting events, and difficult classes to take- kids will be praying. As long as there are people who chose ( yes chose, they have found that homosexuality IS NOT proven to be genetic- read up) to enjoy the company of the same gender in a way that was not intended, then they will do it. But to FORCE me or my kids to accept it is a contradiction because you will not accept my life style choice. For one, it should be the parents job to talk to their kids about life as we all know it- not the school and sure as heck isn't the governments place to tell me how to tell my kids either.
As for those that quote the bible to support your sin- shame on you. God is love, and He calls those who believe in Him and trust in Him to "love your neighbor as our selves", not accept your neighbors' life style choices.
TY CPS for doing your best to keep it all bipartisan. And not choosing one or the other. "

- By telling the Board members to, in effect, "keep your opinions to yourself," is that not violating their free speech??
- By not supporting their decision to pass this along to the proper committee and removing the display in the meantime, is that not being intolerant towards them??
Funny how "free speech" and "intolerance" can so often be self-serving. I grant you "free speech" (but only if your speech pleases me). I expect you to show tolerance (but if you aren't so in the way I wish, I will not tolerate it). "

The world is SOOOO much bigger than Corunna, there are so many different people and religions and lifestyles in this world and I think that these kids have a right to know about it! As far as being worried about "confusing the children"...seriously? Kids are trying to figure out who they are in high school! If a child realizes they are gay or lesbian why should they be made to feel bad about it? I understand that being gay/lesbian is not how GOD intended people to be...BUT there are...you can't sweep them under the rug and deal with it later. When I went to college I felt socially intimidated because I was suddenly faced with different races, cultures and sexual orientations. There is a very big "small town" mentality in Corunna. This can be a breath of fresh air...until it comes to diversity. If you want to prepare children for the real world you need to do more than just make them book smart. "

You can't pick and choose what you want to follow based on your own ignorance and hatred.

Why don't you try to do something good and kind to honor your god and religion, instead of spreading hate and intolerance? Jesus would be ashamed of how you dishonor him. "

" Parents have every right to make complaints, offer suggestions, and control the schools in which their children are enrolled. In Germany, all the schools are controlled by the government and parents have no say in what is taught or any other aspect of campus life. Teachers, students, and administrators are accountable to the parents of the children they teach and not the other way around. This has nothing to do with tolerance or intolerance, but has everything to do with what parents want for their children. In addition, one is not intolerant just because he is opposed to your views. The push these days is for acceptance not tolerance. By the way, I have several friends who live as homosexuals. They know from the get-go that I do not agree with their life style and that I won't change that view since my life is not based on mine or their opinions about homosexuality. We have remained friends, believe it or not. There will be a judgment one day and I certainly won't be the judge since I, too, will be judged. But, know that there will be a judgment and we all will be held accountable before a just judge whose "opinion" does count. "

Oh sure there may be a very very low percentage of folks out there who when they were born they were equipped with both sets of genitalia and the parents had to decide which ones to keep and perhaps they made the wrong pick- that is the only type of case that makes sense when it comes to odd sex choices. Oh I know you gays are going to get all mad- but if I went out and tried to push any other type of odd sex onto your kids, like, it's ok to love a horse or duck or sheep or whatever cause that is your "orientation" then I am sure you would find that disturbing and if not then you really are messed up! You think 9 pictures are going to confuse your child so now those pictures are taken down and tucked away--back in the closet, so to speak.

Now, it you can just get rid of all those gays in the school your kids will be safe.

So sad. Intolerance reigns supreme.

Those kids who have learned one thing--acceptance as defined by the adults doesn't include them if they are homosexual.

I feel really bad for those kids at Corunna who are gay/lesbian or might just be figuring out that they are now and are forced to hide it because of the example the school board has set. By forcing the display to come down they are pushing kids back into the closet, essentially putting them down and making them believe they're bad kids.

It's funny a very popular show I'm sure many high schooler watch "Grey's anatomy" just had a little discussion on this. a gay female doctor is confronted by her father about her sexuality. Her father was spouting bible quotes about homosexuality being evil, this was her response: Jesus.. a new commandment that I give unto you that you love one another. Jesus.. He who is without sin among you let him cast the first stone. Blessed are the merciful for they shall obtain mercy. Jesus.. Blessed are the pure and heart for they see God. Jesus…blessed are those who have been persecuted for righteousness sake for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven. Jesus is my savior Daddy not you, and Jesus would be ashamed of you for judging me, He would be ashamed of you for turning your back on me, He would be ashamed…."

Maybe those in the community need to take a lesson from a TV show and learn that all people need love and tolerance and to save judgement for God, I'm sure he has way more experience than you do. "

" As a former Corunna graduate, I am appalled at the actions of the school board in regards to the issue of creating tolerance for the rights of homosexuals. How do you prepare our high school students to go out into the world beyond Corunna following graduation? What message are you sending that those individuals or families that live this lifestyle should not be tolerated? That is the kind of thinking that gets people hurt or killed.
Whenever you hold a public office, you must put your own personal views aside in order to be a voice for all members of your constituency. My understanding is that Member Lockwood gave a sermon that included the following:
”When I look at these monthly themes it is apparent to me that one does not choose to be a black man, or a woman, or Hispanic, or Latino. One would say that sexual preference is an orientation. One may have an orientation to shoplift and they even say god made them that way but we wouldn’t display it on a bulletin board. One may even have an orientation toward adultery and go as far as god made him that way but we would not condone that in a school setting. These individuals refer to themselves as an orientation. A black man doesn’t choose to be black, a tall white man doesn’t choose to be tall…these people have an orientation or choice for this lifestyle.” Wow, do we really believe that this is the type of representation we need from any public official in the year 2009? I believe that there is only one person who has the right to be this judgmental and that is God himself? It is not the right of anyone but God to make that judgment when the day comes.
Mr. Lockwood’s position on the board should not be a pulpit for his religious views. Is he suggesting that students of Corunna High School who will go out into a world that may have them working next to or for homosexuals should not be tolerant? Shame on you Mr. Lockwood and the board of Corunna Public Schools. You have given the good name of Corunna a black eye with your personal views on this matter. "
