Age 64, of Bancroft, died Sunday, Nov. 1, 2009, at Memorial Healthcare.
Art was a millwright for Buick Motor, Flint until May 19, 1997.
A funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 5, 2009, at St. Mary Catholic Church, 700 Columbia Dr., Durand, with the Rev. Fr. J. Thomas Munley officiating. Burial will be in Union Plains Cemetery, Byron. Visitation at the Streeter Funeral Home, 507 W. Maple, Byron, will be Wednesday from noon to 8 p.m. and Thursday at the church from 9 a.m. until the time of mass. A Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Wednesday followed by a Knights of Columbus degree chalice ceremony.
Arthur was born in Flint on July 12, 1945, the son of Maurice S. and Margaret T. (Whelan) Shelstad. He married Linda Lou Rhodes in Flint on Nov. 25, 1967. He had lived in the Bancroft and Byron areas since 1978.
Art served in the U.S. Navy for four years and the 1st Marine Air Wing as a corpsman medic for one year during the Vietnam War. He was a member of the St. Mary's Catholic Church, Durand, the Knights of Columbus Council 7955, Durand, the Reed-Raymond VFW Post 2272, Durand and the Harold R. Cooley Marine Corp League Detachment 841, Owosso.
Survivor include his wife Linda; daughters Jamie McWilliams of Bancroft, Kristine and husband Edward Taylor of Bancroft and Heather Lueckeman of Fenton, who was like a daughter to Art and Linda; grandchildren Josalyn Skinner, Jaylyn and Jared McWilliams, Carter and Emalee; sisters Mary Maeder of Clio, Marlene Stuart of Flint and Ellen (Tom) Sistak of Ottawa, Ill.; many nieces, nephews and cousins
He was preceded in death by his parents
Memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
