OWOSSO — Niks Coney Island, we barely knew ye.
The restaurant, located at the corner of M-52 and Stewart Street, opened Dec. 2 and is expected to close sometime this week.
“It is with heavy hearts that we must announce we are closing Nik’s Coney Island,” co-owner Nik Kalafatis said Monday in a message posted online. “Though it has been a pleasure serving all of you, it is financially no longer possible. There hasn’t been enough business to pay the bills. (Also, there have been) constant expensive repairs of the building that is in poor overall condition.
“We will remain open this week, or until we have sold the inventory. We would like to serve our customers one last time, and hope that you all have a chance to stop out and support our employees this week. We would also like to take this opportunity to reach out to other local businesses that may need some great employees.”
Kalafatis, his sister and Niks Coney Island manager Kassie Kalafatis, and other family members purchased the restaurant — formerly the Bentley Grill — in October. The brother and sister cleaned, painted, rearranged items, fixed up the kitchen, back rooms and floors before opening.
The siblings possessed experience in the food business thanks to their father, Nick, who owns Nick’s Hometown Grill in Durand. The two restaurants are not affiliated.
The announcement by Niks Coney Island comes on the heels of the sudden closures of Ponderosa restaurant in Caledonia Township and Jumbo’s Burger Bar in Owosso announced in the past two weeks. The three closures were unrelated.
