Red Cross Chairwoman Laura Burroughs presents SageLink Credit Union’s Todd Ackerman and Sally the Camel with the Biggest Money Winner trophy.

OWOSSO — Over 260 enthusiastic sponsors and guests attended the 12th-annual Camel Cup races March 23 to cheer on their favorite camel at D’Mar Banquet and Conference Center.

Earning the 2018 Camel Cup as grand champion was Chemical Bank, with their camel named Cash, while Owosso Eagles Club No. 851 was the winner of the Best Dressed Camel with Dino, their large purple

camel.

SageLink Credit Union was the Biggest Money Camel, raising the most money in advance of the event for their camel Sally.

American Red Cross Camel Cup Chair Laura Burroughs and Shiawassee-Owosso Kiwanian Bob Hardy kept the crowd busy and organized races for the event. Special ribbons, created by Kandi Butcher, were awarded to each race winner, which included:

n Race 1, sponsored by AFLAC: Won by Tri-Mer Corporation, a newcomer in 2018.

n Race 2, sponsored by Caledonia Township Supervisor Joe DeCaire: Won by Roberts Farms.

n Race 3, sponsored by The Whole Dann Family: Won by newcomer Farmers Insurance Brent Singer agency.

n Race 4, sponsored by Kelly Rossman-McKinney. Won by Memorial Healthcare, a returning camel sponsor this year.

n Race 5, sponsored by New Lothrop Insurance: Won by Mowinski Financial.

n Race 6, sponsored by Sally the Camel: Won by Dr. Michael Kramer, D.O.

n Race 7, sponsored by Signature Ford: Won by the new Tri-Mer Corporation camel.

n Race 8, sponsored by Stretch: Won by the newcomer Farmers Insurance Brent Singer Agency camel.

n Race 9, for the Camel Cup Grand Champion, won by Cash, camel from Chemical Bank.

Hosted by the Shiawassee-Owosso Kiwanis Club, organizers noted generous sponsors helped make the event a success. Chemical Bank was a Diamond sponsor ($1,000); Crimson Sponsor ($500) included Meal and More; and Ruby sponsors ($250) were CLH Insurance Agency, SageLink Credit Union, attorney Thomas Renwick and Watkins Brothers Funeral

Track sponsors ($100) were Baker Insurance Bill Baker, Farmers Insurance Brent Singer agency, Hemenway H&R Block, Kinsgbury Farm Bureau Insurance, Ludington Electric and Welcome Home Assisted Living.

Funds raised through the Camel Cup event are contributed by the event host, the Shiawassee-Owosso Kiwanis Club, to the Shiawassee Red Cross’ annual Heroes campaign to support American Red Cross services provided in our area.
