OWOSSO — The Owosso Community Players recently set up a scholarship fund for youth who need financial support to attend OCP workshops, thanks to a donation from the estate of Becky Scherer, who lost her battle to cancer in June 2016.
Scherer, who previously owned Elite Pet Styling, wanted her $3,000 contribution to be used toward anything that would help young people, said friend Gale Rennick, who facilitated the donation.
“Becky loved to sing herself, but often said she never had the opportunities that are now available to youth through OCP’s productions and workshops,” Rennick said.
The first allocation of funds went toward children’s costumes (which will be used for years to come) for the annual Holiday at Lebowsky event.
“This year, as OCP implemented a number of workshops for youth, Rennick realized a scholarship fund was the perfect opportunity for the remainder of Scherer’s gift,” a press release notes. “So far, four students have taken advantage of the scholarship to attend some of the workshops, which have included storytelling, introductory acting, improvisation and fight choreography.”
Students interested in using scholarship funds to attend future workshops need to contact OCP Executive Director Kathy Brooks, the press release notes.
“Scherer’s generous gift will provide for many students, and we continue to seek donations to keep the scholarship fund going,” Brooks said.
Brooks can be reached at (989) 723-4003.
