OWOSSO — The putt-putt of old tractors mingled with the blair of steam whistles Saturday as the Steam Railroading Institute and the Heart of Michigan Antique Tractor Club teamed up for the first Trains and Tractors event at the SRI.

In addition to the heavy equipment on display, the SRI is offered popsicles, coloring books, candy, temporary tattoos, toy footballs and candy to participants. Bounce houses were set up and the SRI’s 7 1/2-gauge train was running almost nonstop. The Shiawassee County Sheriff’s Office and Owosso police also had vehicles on display.

The event was part of the SRI’s “Summer of Steam,” which features various events all year. Hands on the Throttle with No. 126 kicked off the weekend Friday and was slated to take place again today.

Round-trip train rides on the 1931-vintage Lehigh Valley Coal Co. No. 126 took place three times.
