Perry Twp. company plans same-day deliveries

PERRY TWP. — A unique type of facility is moving in, and its owner is looking for 20 to 24 independent-contract delivery drivers.

On July 15, Georgia-based Capstone Logistics is opening a fulfillment center inside a 35,000-square-foot warehouse at 3584 W. Bath Road. The company is handling same-day deliveries for Staples, the office supply retailer.

The service area extends over 172 zip codes, from Roscommon to the north, and to the Michigan-Ohio line to the south.

“This business model is brand new to Shiawassee County. I’m learning so much about where we’re headed in the business world. People want stuff, and they want it now,” said Justin Horvath, president/CEO of Shiawassee Economic Development Partnership, who has been assisting the company.

“We could get more facilities like this in the area. We’re centrally located, in mid-Michigan.”

Drivers will deliver goods in residential and commercial areas to customers who have ordered online. The warehouse will house certain types of Staples products, including paper, which represents 48 percent of the retailer’s sales.

The facility is employing a manager, dispatcher and lead to oversee nighttime operations. Most delivery items are packed and labeled when they arrive in the warehouse.

Drivers will use their own vehicles — a cargo van, sprinter van with high roof, box truck or larger. They will receive a dedicated local route, and work from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, so no evenings or weekends. About 1,600 to 1,800 boxes will be delivered per day.

The gross pay averages $1,200 to $1,500 per week. Master contractors, who handle multiple routes, paying drivers as associates and supplying the delivery vehicles, make even more money, Capstone Director of Operations Harry Vansant said.

Drivers must be 21 and pass a driving and background check. No high school diploma is required. For details or an interview, call head recruiter Britney Jackson at (909) 270-5037, recruiter Alejandra Maciel (who speaks English and Spanish) at (678) 495-0857 or Vansant at (570) 903-1753.

Open interviews will be held from noon to 3 p.m. Wednesday at Michigan Works, 1975 W. M-21 in Owosso Township, and from 6 to 8 p.m. the same day at the Bath Road warehouse.

Vansant said it’s been challenging for Capstone to recruit drivers, he believes because it’s “a different kind of job,” he said.

“It’s been good here so far. Our landlord is a great guy,” Vansant said. “I’ve interviewed good candidates, but recruiting has been a challenge. We’ve actually gone out on foot looking for guys.”

Capstone is a leading North American supply chain solutions partner. The company has more than 520 operating locations, 14,500 associates and 60,000 carriers.
