DURAND — Durand officials Thursday announced its wastewater treatment facility suffered a combined sanitary sewer overflow Thursday because of heavy rain.

According to a press release, an unknown quantity of partially treated sewage was released. The statement says 2.35 inches of rain fell in the area Thursday.

The National Weather Service said the Shiawassee River crested at 6.91 feet Thursday, just short of flood stage, which is 7 feet.

Genesee County officials reported about 500 gallons of raw sewage spilled near a manhole along Lennon Road.

The Genesee County Drain Division reported 2.8 inches of rain contributed to the overflow.

The Shiawassee County Health Department advised recreational users of the Shiawassee River avoid contact with the water until further notice.
