INGHAM COUNTY — The oldest child of 35th Circuit Court Judge Matthew Stewart was killed early Saturday in a traffic crash on Grand River Avenue just east of Meridian Road.

James Stewart, 20, of Saginaw Township, was the oldest of the judge’s five children. Other surviving family members include his stepmother Nicole Stewart; mother and stepfather Julie and William Kolobaric; sisters Emily and Jillian; and brothers John and Charles.

According to 35th Circuit Court staff, Stewart will be out of the office this week. Retired Judge Gerald Lostracco is expected to fill in.

According to the Meridian Township police, Stewart was driving east on Grand River near Meridian Road in Williamston when a westbound vehicle struck Stewart’s vehicle. Both drivers were the sole occupants of their vehicles.

Stewart died at the scene, and police have not yet released any information about the condition of the other driver or what caused the collision.

Meridian Township police, the Ingham County Sheriff’s Office, Michigan State Police and Michigan State University Police responded to the crash.

According to Stewart’s obituary, he was a 2016 Saginaw Heritage High School honors graduate and a junior at Western Michigan University studying political science and psychology.

A funeral service will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church, 4790 Gratiot Road in Saginaw.

A Gofundme page set up for the family had raised more than $4,400 as of this morning.
