Age 70, of Owosso, passed away Saturday, May 18, 2019, at Sparrow Health System.

Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 22, at Salem Lutheran Church with the Rev. James Bare officiating. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 3 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today, May 21 at Nelson-House Funeral Home.

Joseph was born Sept. 26, 1948, in Owosso, the son of Joseph and Rita (Hinspeter) Chapko. He attended Ovid-Elsie High School, and graduated from Owosso High School with the class of 1968. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy.

Joseph was a member of Salem Lutheran Church, the Shiawassee Conservation Association and served in the Shiawassee County Sheriff’s Posse for more than 20 years. He enjoyed singing in the choir and playing golf in his men’s league at Dutch Hollow and a couples’ league with his wife.

Joseph married Carol Pauline Hein at Salem Lutheran Church Jan. 3, 1970. He retired from General Motors after 34 years of service and served the area as a gunsmith for 10 years.

Joseph is survived by his wife Carol; children Joseph (Lisa) Chapko III and Matthew Chapko; grandchildren Alyza and Heidi; sisters Cathy (Glenn) Spencer, JoAnna Chapko and Theressa Chapko; brother Jeffrey; and other loving family and friends.

He was predeceased by his parents and brother Fred Chapko.
