Letter to the editor

There have many letters written both for and against the new proposed county jail. I think the general consensus is that county needs a new jail.

The rub comes from how to do it at a more reasonable cost. A friend of mine came up with a rather unique solution: repurpose the current Owosso junior high into a county jail. The property has many pluses without needing such a large millage to complete the rehab. I realize it would take some strategizing, thinking outside the box and deep cooperation.

The new site for a jail will not be adjacent to the courthouse no matter where the new site is. Transporting prisoners is a constant situation so it would not influence this location greatly. The current jail is in the middle of a town, again not an obstacle.

The middle school building is equipped with an enclose garage area, meal preparation facilities and very possibly more advantage that have not occurred to me. Consideration should be given to the exploration of local possibilities.
