Letter to the editor

Shiawassee County residents have spoken: no new jail. It’s time to put your thinking caps on and think of a new way for a new jail.

I have a suggestion for Sheriff Brian BeGole. The old Pleasant View nursing home on South Norton Street is already built. It has rooms that could be converted to cells. You have two floors, lots of room, a kitchen big enough to cook for all the inmates, a big parking lot, a main entrance on top of the hill and a lower one for an employee entrance.

I’m sure it won’t cost nearly what you were asking for a new building. Just maybe, voters then would approve that.

At least that building would be used. You don’t need the Taj Mahal for a jail, you need a decent building for inmates.

By the way, Sheriff BeGole, I did vote.
