OWOSSO — The community is invited to a free seminar on scams and fraud at 6 p.m. June 9 at Owosso First United Methodist Church, 1500 N. Water St.

With focus on “Don’t be a victim!,” Det. Thomas Holcomb will share real-life examples to help attendees identify scams by strangers and how to avoid scams. He will also share information and tips on protecting oneself and avoiding exploitation by family members and caregivers.

Holcomb is a financial fraud investigator for the PREVENT Elder Justice Initiative for the Prosecuting Attorneys Association of Michigan. He served in law enforcement in Kansas and in Michigan for 32 years, successfully investigating and solving a variety of cases, including child abuse, elder abuse, embezzlement, fraud, felony assaults and homicide.

He retired in 2015 as a detective sergeant with the Owosso Police Department.

Light refreshments will follow the presentation. For more information, call the church office at (989) 725-2201.
