ELSIE — Emily Rinz’s two-run homer and a game-ending triple play highlighted Durand’s 3-1 win over Ovid-Elsie in the opener as the Railroaders swept the Marauders in a Monday doubleheader.

Durand completed the sweep with an 8-6 victory in Game 2.

Madison Raley was the winning pitcher in Game 1, outdueling Ovid-Elsie’s Mikayla Timm. Raley worked all seven innings, allowing just one hit with seven strikeouts and four walks.

Raley said she owed a lot to her defense.

“I was really proud of them today — we really stepped up a lot,” Raley said. “We’ve been struggling a little bit but I felt that we really improved today. I threw my curve very well today and it was probably my top pitch.”

Timm took the loss, allowing just five hits with 14 strikeouts and no walks. Each team made three errors.

Rinz batted 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Danica Lenemann doubled in the first and came home on Rinz’s homer.

“It was a fastball and I got all of it,” Rinz said. “It was on the outside (of the plate). It was good to win both games today, we needed them. We came out on top.”

Ovid-Elsie had one last chance in the bottom of the seventh, putting runners on first and second with no outs. Rianna McCafferty’s fly ball to right appeared to have a chance to drop in, however, it was caught and Durand proceeded to double off both runners for a game-ending triple play.

In Game 2, Durand rallied from a 4-0 deficit to score seven times in the fourth. Raley came on in relief of Maddy Whitcomb in the bottom of the third inning. Raley worked the final 41/3 inning and gave up two runs on five hits. She struck out five and walked two.

“In the second game we got down 4-0 and that one really scared me,” Durand coach Tim Ducharme said. “We weren’t hitting the ball very well. We didn’t really hit the ball well in the first game — and that’s not a knock on Ovid-Else’s pitcher. In the second game we finally started waking up.”

Rinz batted 2-for-3 with two RBIs, while Linemann and Riley Vandendries each went 2-for-4. Raley, Jade Garske and Bailey DeFrenn each had run-scoring singles. Baylee Huff doubled and drove in two runs.

Timm took the loss, pitching all seven innings, giving up 13 hits with 12 strikeouts and one walk. She finished the day with 26 strikeouts and just one walk.

“My fastball was going well today,” Timm said. “I was determined to win the second one. Just some little errors hurt us today.”

Ovid-Elsie took a 1-0 lead on Sadie Casaday’s groundout to first, scoring Zoe Baiz, who had reached on an infield error. Holton-Pugh made it 2-0 in the second after doubling; McCafferty singled her in.

Ovid-Elsie went up 4-0 in the third when Timm and Chloe Taylor both walked and Holton-Pugh laced a two-run single.

McCafferty batted 3-for-3 for Ovid-Elsie with an RBI. Holton-Pugh clubbed two hits and drove in two runs. Kennedy Haynes had a two-run single in the sixth inning.

McCafferty said Ovid-Elsie has a fresh outlook this season.

“Compared to last year, it’s very different,” McCafferty said. “We’ve got a new coach and a new program. Having a strong pitcher and infielders helps with the batting and it brings everyone up.”

McCafferty said she is swinging the bat much better than she was in the beginning of the season.

“With the help of coach (Felicia Gingrich) I’ve been hitting better,” McCafferty said. “At the beginning of the season, I was a little rough. But she’s helped me get it around and I’ve been getting good basehits.”

Gingrich, Ovid-Elsie’s first-year coach, said the Marauders are building a winning attitude with each game. The pitching of Timm has been a major asset, she said.

“She’s a big, big asset to the team,” Gingrich said. “Today she did outstanding. Her movement was working, she was hitting her spots and she definitely kept those girls off balance. And she had a lot of strikeouts.”

Durand improved to 4-10 overall and 2-4 in the Mid-Michigan Activities Conference. Ovid-Elsie now stands 6-10 overall and 4-4 in the MMAC.
