CARSON CITY — Jenna Smith split two defenders and scored as the buzzer sounded to lift Morrice past Carson City-Crystal 36-34 in a thrilling girls basketball season opener Wednesday.

“(Smith) threw it in to Gracie Nowak and she passed it to Jenna and she split two defenders from the left wing and hit a floater— it hit the rim and bounced in,” Morrice head coach Kris Smith said. “This is a very good win for us. Carson City-Crystal is a very good basketball team. It was a very well-played game defensively.”

Jenna Smith and Olivia Riley each scored 12 points for Morrice (1-0).

Riley had four 3-pointers.

“She missed her first 3-pointer but then I think she hit four straight,” Kris Smith said of Riley. “Jessica Eva hit a big 3-pointer to put us up by five with 21/2 minutes to go.”

Bailey Fitzgerald scored 12 points for Carson City-Crystal.
