JENISON —Byron’s Sarah Marvin ended a dominant sophomore season in the throwing events with two state championships at the Division 3 state track meet Saturday at Jenison High School, winning the discus and shot put crowns.

Marvin won the discus with a throw of 133 feet, 11 inches, and the shot put with a heave of 44 feet, 11 1/2 inches. Perry’s Elizabeth Gramza won the 100 hurdles title in 15.91 seconds.

In the boys meet, New Lothrop’s Aidan Harrison ended his high school career with a state championship, winning the 100-meter dash by a razor-thin margin. Harrison, who will play football at the University of Missouri, beat Kent City’s Giovanni Weeks by .02 seconds, 11.07 to 11.09.

New Lothrop also captured a state title in the 400 relay in 43.34 seconds

Other girls Division 3 all-staters: Hailey Lewis of Perry (long jump, third, 16-8 1/2); Gramza (pole vault, third, 10-3); Caitlyn Bruff of New Lothrop (100 dash, fourth, 13.05); Byron’s Becky Marvin (shot put, sixth, 37-4); Laingsburg’s Shaily Baynes (pole vault, seventh, 9-6); and Laingsburg’s Emma Kribs (100 dash, eighth, 13.22),

Other boys Division 3 all-staters: Logan Zakoor of Byron (pole vault, fifth, 14-0); Denver Orland0 of Byron (pole vault, sixth, 13-9); Brady Hawks of Laingsburg (eighth, 110 hurdles, 16.06); Isaac Zamora of Chesaning (eighth, 300 hurdles, 41.89) and Thomas Heslip of New Lothrop (eighth, 400 dash, 51.91).

All four of New relays set school records and took all-state. The 400 relay was sixth in 51.30 seconds; the 3,200 relay was also sixth (8:19.63); the 800 placed second in 1:30.26; and the 1,600 claimed eighth (3:30.94).

Corunna’s Jacobs part of two state titles

ZEELAND — Corunna senior Ben Jacobs had a hand in two state title performance in the boys Division 2 state meet at Zeeland.

Jacobs the individual crown in the 1,600-meter run. Jacobs placed first in 4 minutes, 19.79 seconds. He held off the charge of second place Michael Hancock of Dearborn Divine Child (4:20.53).

Jacobs also joined forces with Evan Roka, Carter Lovejoy and Mason Warner to win the 3,200 relay in 7:53.20. That was nearly three seconds faster than the second-place team from Zeeland West.

Lovejoy finished third in the 800 run (1:56.62).

Morrice’s Valentine third in Division 4

HUDSONVILLE — Emma Valentine of Morrice finished third in the high jump at the girls Division 4 state finals Saturday.

Valentine cleared 5-2.

Sam Shively placed ninth in the 110 high hurdles. Morrice was 15th in the boys 400 relay.
