DURAND — Byron won its fourth straight district softball title, downing New Lothrop 4-1 in Monday’s Division 3 district championship game at Durand.

The Eagles (20-12) advanced to Saturday’s first-round regional game at Otisville LakeVille against Burton Bendle. That game will start at noon. The other regional semifinal pits Chesaning against Millington at 10 a.m.

“It was a big one,” Byron head coach Anne Boillat said. “We knew it was going to be a good game against New Lothrop being that we split during the regular season.”

Byron scored all four of its runs in the fifth inning after New Lothrop scored in the third.

Lauren Viele was the winning pitcher. She worked all seven innings, giving up five hits with nine strikeouts and one walk.

Alexis Ragnone batted 2-for-2 with two doubles and two RBIs for Byron. Katie Tennyson and Viele each drove in a run.

Jersey Hemgesberg took the loss for the Hornets (27-10). She gave up two runs and four hits through the first 42/3 innings. She struck out five and walked five.

Hemgesberg batted 2-for-3 and Charleigh Birchmeier drove in a run.

Chesaning repeats as district champ

CHESANING — Chesaning won its second straight district Monday, beating Saginaw Valley Lutehran 10-2 in the Division 3 district finals.

Taylor Gross struck out 13 with one walk for Chesaning. The Indians had 12 hits, with Erica Barta smashing three — including a triple — with three RBIs. Paige Ginderske also drove in three runs while batting 2-for-4 with a triple. Skylar Walser had two RBIs and joined Elizabeth Coon and Lilly Cooper with two hits.

“It was a whole team effort and everyone got into the act,” Indians coach Ron Poyer said.

The No. 9-ranked Indians (27-3) will face No. 1 Millington at 10 a.m. Saturday at Otisville LakeVille. The winner faces Byron or Bendle.

Poyer said his team will work hard to get ready for the top-ranked Cardinals. Poyer said Chesaning will have to play better defense than it did Monday after it committed four errors.

“We’ll have our hands full,” Poyer said.

Laingsburg wins district title

LAINGSBURG — Kara Mahoney homered, scored five runs and drove in three as Laingsburg won a Division 3 district title at home by beating Bath 14-9 on Monday.

Mahoney, batting leadoff, walked four times for the Wolfpack to spark the offense. Jordan Langdon was 4-for-5 with a pair of triples and six runs batted in, and Elena Kozachik pitched the Wolfpack to victory while going 3-for-5 with a double and two RBIs.

“She gives us a chance to win,” Laingsburg coach Jeff Cheadle said of Kozachik, who missed half the season with a stress fracture in her leg. “The rain (Saturday) helped us, because it gave her a chance to rest.”

The Wolfpack (17-20) mercied Perry in Saturday’s semifinal, 16-3, putting the game out of reach with seven runs in the third inning. Kozachik and Langdon both went 2 for 5 with three RBIs and Ava Doyle was 3 for 3 with three runs scored.

Laingsburg will meet Kent City in a regional semifinal at Bath at noon Saturday.

Potterville fends off Morrice rally

POTTERVILLE — Host Potterville won its first-ever district title by holding off a Morrice rally in the bottom of the seventh.

After the Orioles loaded the bases, Mandy Miller drove Jessica Eva home with a sacrifice fly to make it 11-10, but Morrice could not convert after that.

“They played a little better than we did,” Morrice coach Gene Munro said. “We fought back. There was a lot of drama, a lot of fun and a lot of excitement. We just came up a run short.”

Potterville took the lead for good in the fifth inning with a four-run outburst. Three of the runs were unearned on two of Morrice’s six errors.

“That was the big deal,” Munro said. “Six errors is what beat us. We definitely did not play well enough to win.”

Kylee Kiczenski was 4-for-5 with two runs scored and a run batted in, while Miller was 3-for-4 with a double and three RBIs for Morrice (15-5).
