Chesaning alumnus Jake Gross helped Northwood University beat Ashland 4-3 May 10 in the GLIAC baseball tournament.

Gross started and struck out four over five innings, scattering three hits and three runs — two earned. He got a no-decision as Ashland scored an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 3-2 lead at the time.

Northwood, which lost to Davenport on the first day of the tournament, was eliminated Saturday with a 6-3 loss to Saginaw Valley State.

The Timberwolves (33-19) fell to Bellarmine Thursday in the first round of the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional and will play an elimination game today against Ashland.

BASEBALL

Grant Steinborn, Concordia-Ann Arbor (New Lothrop) — Steinborn went 2-for-4 and drove in a run May 8 as Concordia fell 3-2 to Central Michigan in a nonconference matchup. The Cardinals (34-19) are ranked No. 2 in the National Christian College Athletic Association and are awaiting seeding in the NCCAA World Series, set to take place May 22-25.

Jordan Klapko, Mott CC (Owosso) — Klapko went 0-f0r-2 Tuesday as Mott fell 12-0 to Kellog Community College in the NJCAA Division II Region 12 tournament.

Adrian College head coach (Owosso) — Rainey’s Bulldogs will begin the 2019 NCAA Division III tournament today, hosting second-seeded Heidelberg at 5 p.m. Adrian won the MIAA regular season and tournament championships.

Keith Veale, Mt. Vernon Nazarene head coach (Owosso) — Veale’s NVNU team fell 4-3 to Spring Arbor May 4 in the Crossroads League tournament. The Cougars finished the season 36-17.

SOFTBALL

Alexis Andrews, Cleary (Byron) — Andrews hit a three-run double in the fifth inning of Cleary’s 10-1 rout of Judson (Alabama) in the first game of the USCAA Softball Small College World Series Monday. She struck out in her only at-bat Tuesday, a 5-3 Cleary win.

Tyler Adkins, Lansing CC (Laingsburg) — Adkins went 1-for-2 and scored a run Tuesday as LCC beat Jackson College 3-2 in the NJCAA Division II District I tournament quarterfinals. Lansing was eliminated by Lake Michigan College later in the day in the semifinals.

Tori Hyde, Mott CC (Corunna) — Hyde went 1-for-2 Tuesday as Mott fell 3-0 to Oakland Community College in the NJCAA Division II District J tournament. She was 0-for-5 in two games Monday.

TRACK AND FIELD

Dillon McClintock, Michigan State (Owosso) — McClintock took third in the 800 May 10-12 at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships in Iowa City, Iowa. She finished in 2 minutes, 5.83 seconds.

Kolten Lauer, Indiana Tech (Perry) — Lauer won the javelin throw in 174 feet, 6 inches May 8 at the Lindsey Wilson National Qualifier in Columbia, Kentucky.

GOLF

Jagger Richard, Northwood (Laingsburg) — Richard finished with a 14-over 230 over three rounds (78-75-77), tying for 70th overall, at the NCAA Super Regional May 9-10 in Hot Springs, Arkansas.

Brett Brown, Mott CC (Durand) — Brown took 15th, shooting a 19-over 163 (81-82) Monday and Tuesday at the NJCAA Division II Region 12 tournament at Bedford Valley Golf Club in Battle Creek. Mott finished second among the four teams.
