ORTONVILLE — The Corunna softball team got in a final tuneup before Saturday’s district tournament Thursday, sweeping Ortonville Brandon 19-3 and 17-6.

The Cavaliers (7-24), who lost 22 of their first 23 games this season, ended the regular season with six wins in their last seven games.

Both games featured an 11-run inning by Corunna. The Cavaliers scored 11 runs in the third inning of the opener to end it after three innings, and scored 11 in the top of the first in the nightcap, which went five.

In the opener, Morgan Renwick, Allyson Vowell and Danielle French each had three hits, including a double. Renwick also had four RBIs, Vowell three and French two.

In the finale, Bridget Ryon pitched the Cavaliers to victory while also belting a homer and driving in three runs. Renwick added a triple and three RBIs, while French was 2-for-3 with a double and two runs batted in.

Corunna will meet Alma in a Division 2 semifinal at St. Johns on Saturday.

Byron splits with Swartz Creek

BYRON — The Eagles were just two outs away from a sweep in the nightcap on Thursday, but Swartz Creek, which was the “home” team, scored four times in the bottom of the seventh to pull out the victory.

The Eagles (19-12) won the opener 2-0. Lauren Viele tossed a four-hitter, striking out 10 while going 3-for-3 at the plate. Jenna Orlando and Riley Viele had RBIs for the Eagles.

In the second game, Byron took a 4-1 lead after five innings.

“They hit the ball, and we didn’t get it in,” Byron coach Anne Boillat said. “It’s a bummer, but we have to work on taking care of business on Saturday.”

Lauren Viele took the loss, allowing just three earned runs, and was 2-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs. Riley Viele also was 2-for-4, while Raegan Forgie homered for the Eagles, who play the winner of the New Lothrop-Durand game for the district championship at Durand at about 2 p.m. on Saturday.
